Carbon mineralisation project at Vale Clydach Nickel Refinery

C-Zero Ltd and Vale Clydach Nickel Refinery are developing a project to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions and remediate historic basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS) slag in South Wales.

BOS slag mineralisation

Overview

The project will capture CO₂ from the nickel refinery in Swansea and react it with BOS slag at the Tata Steel Port Talbot site to create stable calcium carbonate and aggregate products — permanent carbon storage and useful construction materials from an existing industrial waste stockpile.

Why this project

  • Permanently sequester CO₂ emissions from the refinery in mineral form.
  • Remediate a long-standing BOS slag stockpile in a controlled manner.
  • Contribute to regional and national net-zero ambitions.
  • Demonstrate a scalable, circular-economy solution for heavy industry in South Wales.

Benefits to the community

  • Long-term investment in low-carbon industrial infrastructure.
  • Skilled employment in operations, testing and logistics.
  • Reduced environmental risk from historic industrial waste.
  • Potential local supply of lower-carbon aggregate.
